by Alyson Gerber
Twelve-year-old Rachel Brooks must wear a back brace to straighten her spine. Rachel’s scoliosis is a serious health concern, but she never allows herself to give up her dreams of playing soccer and trying to live as normal a life as possible. Rachel struggles with wearing the brace and concealing it from her friends and classmates but once they find out they tease her about it and treat her differently which makes life more of a struggle for her.
Rachel learns some very important lessons that some people would never learn. Rachel learns that she needs to communicate her feelings and needs with her parents and friends. She also has to forgive her friends and classmates as she realises that no one’s perfect and everyone makes mistakes. Rachel becomes a stronger and better person in the end.
Rachel is a character that a lot of young girls could relate to, especially those who have had scoliosis or a medical condition that has made them feel different to everyone else.
Braced is a touching story about scoliosis.
Alyson Gerber has written a brilliant book from her own experiences of having scoliosis and it opens the readers eyes up to the condition. This book teaches you how to accept yourself and how to make the most out of a bad situation.
